One of four town Trails in central Derbyshire. Romantic historians believe this town was named after King Alfred himself, but there is some scepticism about this. PuzzleTrails was asked to write this Trail originally by the local authority, along with Trails in Heanor, Belper and Ripley - to try and showcase these towns as being worthy of visiting. They turned out to be very surprising to us as Trail writers as there was much more to see here than we first thought. Wander about the town centre. Take a long hard look at the War Memorial with all the heroes this area has sent to defend us, and look for the hidden gem clues of places you might have passed every day and not realised their significance. There are plenty of shops, cafes, pubs and places for refreshment as well as green spaces to enjoy moments of quiet. Nearby are the world Heritage sites of Derwent Valley where the industrial revolution began - as well as being on the doorstep of the Derbyshire Peak District.
